Luckily, you can connect WiFi to a non-WiFi-enabled laptop. By determining the type of card you need and following the steps required to install it, you can have wireless online access in no time.
1. Determine the type of card slots that are available on your laptop. Older units tend to feature PCMCIA slots, whereas newer devices offer express card slots. Other devices offer PCI or PCI Express slots. You can usually find the connection types by searching the manufacturer's website or by consulting your user manual.
2. Search for Gateway P-171X FX WiFi adapters that offer the same type of card slot connectivity found on your computer. For example, the Netgear WG511 is a PC card (PCMCIA is often referred to as a PC card), whereas the Belkin N1 uses ExpressCard connectivity.
3. Turn on your computer and plug your card into your slot. You should receive a message in Microsoft Windows saying, "New hardware has been discovered." Click that option and follow the installation directions. You can now connect to wireless networks. Try finding networks by clicking on the image of two computers in the bottom part of your screen. If you cannot connect, move onto Step 4.
4. Install any available software that comes with your Gateway P-171X FX wireless WiFi card if the card does not auto install. In some cases, such as with Belkin cards, connection software can be used to find networks.
